  • Council Meeting Highlights - June 27, 2024

    🔵 Park Naming Results Council reviewed input collected from residents to assist in naming the new park in Berwyn. The feedback has been shortlisted, and now residents are asked to provide the final vote to determine the park's name from the following options: Rod and Irene Crumb Park, Berds Park, Norm Allen Park, Berwyn Community Park, Community Climbers, and The Mark Park. Residents can vote on the Village of Berwyn Facebook Page, by emailing cao@berwyn.ca , or by calling the Village office at 780-338-3922 with your preferred name. The new park was made possible by funding from an Alberta Government Grant. 🔵 Fallen Soldiers Memorial Plaques Council reviewed feedback from residents who identified soldiers from the Berwyn area from a listing provided by the Fallen Soldiers of Alberta. Council approved allocating $300 for plaques for each of the five individuals identified. 🔵 Victim Services Funding Request Council approved $300 in funding for Peace Regional Victim Services, acknowledging the vital support they provide to residents in need during difficult times. 🔵 Council Welcomes Jatin Saini Council welcomed Jatin Saini to the Village of Berwyn as Finance Clerk. Jatin is replacing Greta Vasadi, whose official last day with the Village was June 26, 2024. Council extends appreciation to Greta for her service and contributions to the Village of Berwyn and wishes her well as she relocates to Africa. 🔵 Cheque Signing Authority Council approved the appointment of Jatin Saini as a signing authority for the Village of Berwyn and the removal of Greta Vasadi, the former Finance Clerk, from the signing authority list. 🔵 CAO Report The Village of Berwyn CAO, Matthew Norburn, provided Council with an update on day-to-day operations and the progress of several key projects. He reported on the Mainstreet construction, the Mainstreet community celebration scheduled for August 24, the Berwyn Chamber Business Mixer event, and the Iwantwireless upgrade, which will offer fiber-like internet speeds to Berwyn residents. 🔵 FCSS Update Council reviewed a report from Tracy Halerwich, the Director of Grimshaw Community Services, detailing the events and programs organized, supported, and hosted by the department in Berwyn and the surrounding region. Council expressed their gratitude to Tracy and the FCSS team for their dedication and effort in delivering a wide range of programs to the Village of Berwyn and the broader community. They acknowledged the positive feedback received from residents and appreciated the variety of activities offered in Berwyn. 🔵 Council Meeting Schedule Council moved that the Village of Berwyn reduce the number of meetings to one per month during the months of July, August, and December 2024. Village of Berwyn Council Meetings will be held on December 19, August 22, and July 25, 2024. 🔵 New Signs and Speed Bumps Council approved purchasing one additional stop sign, two additional speed bumps, and two warning signs to enhance road safety in the Village of Berwyn. 🔵 ATCO Franchise Agreement First reading of Bylaw No. 713 regarding a new 10-year agreement with ATCO.

  • Mainstreet Celebration

    Save the Date! We are hosting a celebration of the much-anticipated completion of the Berwyn Mainstreet Paving Project on August 24, 2024 on Mainstreet Berwyn. The daytime community celebration will include opening remarks by government dignitaries, bouncy castles, face painting, a wrestling demonstration, a corn-eating contest sponsored by Bridgeview Market Gardens, a FireSmart BBQ with the MD of Peace in partnership with TC Energy and Grimshaw Coop and much more!   • Mainstreet Project Starts June 24th

    Mainstreet Paving Project Update - June 21, 2024 June 24th - Construction will begin at the north end of Mainstreet. From June 24th - July 10th, the north end of Mainstreet will be closed to traffic. See the image below for detailed project timelines, with a completion goal of mid-August. Thank you for your support and patience as we work with Ruel on paving Mainstreet Berwyn.

  • June 13 Council Highlights

    Speed Bump and Stop Sign Installation To reduce speed levels and improve safety for pedestrians and drivers, Council approved installing trial speed bumps at the intersections of 55th Avenue and 50th Street, and 54th Avenue and 50th Street. Council also directed the Administration to provide pricing to convert the intersections at 49th Street and 50th Street, and 50th Street and 50th Avenue to four-way stops. Outdoor Structure at Berwyn Park Council approved the construction of a 20x22 outdoor structure at Berwyn Park with funding from the Local Government Financial Framework (LGFF) grant. Directive Three Report As a requirement in the Viability Review by Municipal Affairs, Council approved the update to the Village of Berwyn’s 2024 Action Plan. Fallen Heroes Project Council reviewed a listing provided by the Fallen Soldiers of Alberta that includes names of soldiers from the Berwyn area. Council directed administration to post the listing on the Village of Berwyn Facebook page to see if any residents recognize the names. Public Works Report Del Cardinal, Village of Berwyn Public Works Foreman, provided Council with an update that includes the hiring of a summer student, maintenance of green spaces, work to the Berwyn park, completion of the nine-hole disc golf course, and regular day-to-day work. Plans are underway to patch the road by the new park at the same time as the Mainstreet paving, and Public Works is waiting on quotes to resurface the tennis courts for possible use for pickleball. Local Government Fiscal Framework Capital and Operating Program Agreements Council moved to enter into the Local Government Fiscal Framework (LGFF) Capital & Operating Program Agreements. Signing these agreements secures essential funding for both capital and operating expenses, reducing the financial burden on local resources and enabling the Village to undertake significant infrastructure projects and maintain operational efficiency. Commercial Driving School Grand Opening Council appointed Councillor Tristan VanderKlok and Nicole Johnson to attend the Peace River School Division (PRSD) Driving Academy’s Grand Opening Celebration on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at the PRSD Central Operations building in Grimshaw.

  • Council Meeting Highlights - May 23/24

    Berwyn Campsite Council directed administration to seek proposals for the operation of the Berwyn Campsite for the 2024 camping season. Park Naming Competition and Sponsorship Council directed administration to set up a competition inviting residents to name the new playground and park area and to also seek sponsorship opportunities in the community. Resident Request Council heard a resident request to be permitted to erect a four foot fence to accommodate medical needs. Council directed administration to modify the existing development permit to allow the four-foot fence. The bylaw currently allows for a three-foot fence in front yards. ATCO Franchise Fee Council directed administration to bring the rules and applicable bylaws to the next meeting in order to discuss Atco Electric and Atco Gas franchise fees. CAO receives CLGM designation Council congratulated CAO Matthew Norburn for his recent achievement of becoming a Certified Local Government Manager (CLGM). CAO Norburn earned this designation by completing coursework through the University of Alberta. He was officially recognized at the CLGM Conference in Kananaskis on May 16, 2024, by the Society of Local Government Managers (SLGM). The SLGM is the professional organization that oversees local government managers in Alberta, ensuring that its members serve in the best interests of local government. Library Board Council approved Mary Willemsen on the Village of Berwyn Library Board.

  • Hiring: Summer Maintenance Labourer

    The Village of Berwyn invites applications for the Summer Maintenance Labourer Position. POSITION SUMMARY: Start Date: Approximately the 1st week of May 2024, for a duration of 16 weeks. Hourly Wage: $18.00 Duties: General labour, grounds maintenance such as mowing, landscaping, identifying and eliminating noxious weeds, planting, watering flowers, and painting, maintenance and upgrading of existing infrastructure in the outdoor parks, including the playgrounds, fields, and ball diamonds as well as other duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: A valid driver's license (or obtainable prior to the start date). Physical fitness. Ability to stand/walk for extended periods. Able to operate landscaping or other equipment e.g., weed-eaters, mowers (training may be provided).     I Want Wireless has been contracted by the provincial and federal government and is being provided with $350,000-$500,000 in grant funding to upgrade systems to provide Berwyn residents with fibre-like internet speeds. I Want Wireless is in the process of upgrading its systems with the goal of providing high-speed internet to Berwyn by the end of May 2024. The government grant funding is geared to ensure all Canadian communities have access to reliable internet. Plans range from $49.95 -- $159/month. More information will be distributed when available. Residents can learn more and sign up at iwantwireless.ca.

  • Council Meeting Highlights - April 11

    Audit Report Cheri Peterson from MNP presented the findings of the audit of the Village of Berwyn’s Audited Financial Statements for the 2023 fiscal year. Cheri shared thorough information with Council, answered questions, and thanked Greta Vasadi, Village of Berwyn Financial Clerk for her support throughout the audit. Property Auction Date Council approved holding a property auction on August 18, 2024 for tax recovery. Public Works Report Council reviewed a report from Del Cardinal, Public Works Lead Hand, that included updates and project plans for the Village’s Public Works Department. The updates include the current progress on spring cleaning, Village beautification, and Water Operator training. Upcoming projects include asphalt patching, new playground beautification, manhole upgrades, and the addition of benches, bins, and planters to be placed around the Village. Council expresses appreciation to Public Works for their continued dedication to maintaining and improving the Village.

Public Hearing - Land Use Bylaw 710 Amendment A Public Hearing was held regarding Land Use Bylaw 710 with updates to the class definition for  “Dwelling Unit” and “Tiny Home” under Section 1.5 and provisions for Tiny Homes under Section 6, Special Land Use Provisions. The updates recommended by Komiete Tetteh, Manager of Planning for Mackenzie Municipal Services Agency, outline various compliance conditions and requirements regarding the placement of Tiny Homes on residential land in the Village of Berwyn. No objections were put forth and Council passed third reading. Arena Subdivision Administration approved a budget of $5000 to subdivide the park from the arena. Vacant/Unoccupied Properties Bylaw Council approved the transition from the current Policy to a Bylaw regarding Assessment Classes and Vacant/Unoccupied Property Identification in the Village of Berwyn. Budget Meeting Council will meet on April 14, 2024 at 9:00 am for the Village of Berwyn Capital Budget planning meeting. Municipal Borrowing Bylaw Council approved updates to the Borrowing Bylaw, allowing the Village of Berwyn to borrow short-term credit, if required, for the 2024 fiscal year.
