The Village of Berwyn is proud to be a Citizens on Patrol (COP) community, actively working together to keep our neighborhood safe. Our volunteers serve as the eyes and ears of the community and have built a strong partnership with local law enforcement, who attend our meetings and collaborate with us in our efforts. Please consider getting involved, as they are always looking for new members. The more we have, the greater the coverage of our area, and the safer our community will be. If you’re interested in learning more, we encourage you to connect with a Village of Berwyn COP member. COP members act as a vital liaison between the community and the RCMP, ensuring we all stay informed and connected. - Welcome to Madison McLachlan
We're excited to introduce Madison McLachlan, our new Front Desk Customer Service and Financial Assistant at the Village of Berwyn! Madison is a fantastic addition to our team, bringing her friendly demeanor and dedication to providing excellent service to our residents. Living on a farm in the County of Northern Lights, Madison considers Berwyn her hometown, as many of her friends and family reside here. A recent graduate from GPS in 2023, she entered the workforce to find inspiration for her future career. In her spare time, Madison loves cooking, baking, horseback riding, and camping. So far, her favorite part of working for the Village of Berwyn has been meeting everyone and getting involved in the community she knows and loves. We’re thrilled to have her on board!
- Council Meeting Highlights
October 10, 2024 Organizational Meeting Council held its organizational meeting where Nicole Johnson was elected as Mayor, Ken Montie as Deputy Mayor, and Councillors were appointed to various committees and boards. Council thanked Ken for his service as Mayor and welcomed Nicole into the role. Arena Delegation Johnathon McLeod, a Berwyn resident and Arena Society member, attended the meeting to discuss the future of the Berwyn Arena. Positive conversations were had, and Council will address the topic further at the October 24, 2024 council meeting. Atco Energy Systems Representatives from ATCO Energy Systems provided information about the Lights Out program and ATCO Franchise fee. They also shared information regarding a community grant program aimed at energy efficiency and encouraged residents to use the ATCO app for real-time updates on outages and to report streetlight issues. Mowing Services Approval Policy Council approved the Mowing Services Policy, which establishes guidelines for the approval of external mowing and grounds maintenance in the Village, ensuring the process is streamlined and transparent.
- Nicole Johnson elected as Mayor
The Village of Berwyn is excited to welcome Nicole Johnson as the newly elected Mayor. Nicole was elected during the Village of Berwyn Organizational Meeting held on October 10, 2024. She has served as a Councillor and Deputy Mayor during her two-plus years of service. When she first started on Council, there were only three Councillors; now, there is a full Council of five. Nicole lives in Berwyn with her husband, Nolan, and their two children, Jax and Hunter. They are outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy quadding, camping, and snowmobiling, and they love spending time with family. In addition to her role as Mayor, Nicole serves on the Lac Cardinal Regional Economic Development Board and the Berwyn Library Board, and she has aspirations to join the Alberta Municipalities Board in the future. Nicole expressed her enthusiasm for Berwyn as a strong and unified community where everyone is dedicated to making it the best it can be. “I think it’s hard enough these days to get by. How wonderful it is to have a community where we can help one another, support each other, and share great ideas for our Village,” says Nicole. She also noted that the Council is eager to hear ideas and concerns from residents, business owners, and supporters. “With the input of our community and the dedication of our Council, I believe Berwyn will continue to thrive as a great place to live.” Congratulations, Nicole, and thank you for your service on Council and your evident dedication and passion for the Village of Berwyn.

Fire Prevention Week™ | October 6–12, 2024 This year's theme is “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!™” Let's prioritize safety by ensuring every home has working smoke alarms! INSTALL smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home. TEST them monthly by pushing the test button. REPLACE smoke alarms every 10 years or if they fail to respond when tested. Remember to consider the needs of all family members, especially those with sensory or physical disabilities. - Council Meeting Highlights - Sept 12/24
Social Media Policy Council approved a Social Media Policy outlining guidelines for public interaction on the Village of Berwyn’s social media platforms. It details acceptable behavior, content moderation standards, and consequences for inappropriate conduct. The policy can be viewed here. Town Cleanup Event Council approved hosting a Fall Cleanup Event from September 16 to 30, 2024, by placing a roll-off bin in front of the old Public Works shop where residents can dispose of yard debris and unpainted wood. For residents unable to transport their debris to the bin, Public Works will offer curbside pickup during the week of September 16 to 20, 2024. These residents are asked to place their yard debris and unpainted wood items at the front curb. No household items should be placed by the curb or in the bin. Speed Bumps and Stop Signs Council discussed the stop sign and speed bump project and directed Administration to proceed with installing bases for the speed bumps and purchasing two additional stop signs to convert the two-way stop at Glenmeyer Park into a four-way stop. Public Hearing Council held a Public Hearing regarding Bylaw 716, a proposed amendment to the Village of Berwyn Land Use Bylaw 601, with no concerns put forth. Land Use Bylaw 716 Amendment Council approved the second and third readings to the Land Use Bylaw 716 amendments. Key changes include: New community spaces for public use include community gardens, halls, and indoor recreation facilities. Re-districting specific areas from General Residential to Parks and Recreation to make room for these new developments. Tax Penalty Bylaw 717 Council approved Tax Penalty Bylaw 717. The proposed bylaw formalizes the updated penalty structure for unpaid property taxes and rescinds the outdated Bylaw 593.
- Fall Clean Up
The Village will be conducting a Fall Clean-Up, with a roll-off bin placed in front of the old Public Works shop starting on Monday, September 16, 2024. This bin is for yard debris and unpainted wood only—household garbage should not be placed in it. If you are unable to transport your debris to the bin, Public Works will be offering curbside pickup one day next week. Simply leave your debris by the front curb, and they will collect it for you.

Village of Berwyn – Front Desk Customer Service & Financial Assistant (Part-Time) The Village of Berwyn seeks a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Part-Time Front Desk Customer Service & Financial Assistant . Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), this position is critical in providing exceptional service to our residents while assisting with various financial and clerical tasks. This is a part-time position, requiring availability three days a week . General Responsibilities: Greet and assist the public courteously and efficiently at the front desk. Handle telephone inquiries and perform reception duties, including cash receipting and customer transactions. Assist in preparing and delivering bank deposits as required. Maintain and update a current Procedural Manual. Provide support in other related duties as assigned by the CAO. Collaborate positively as a team member in all Village of Berwyn operations. Financial Responsibilities: Assist in maintaining accounts payable records, verifying invoices, and matching them with purchase orders. Ensure proper coding and signatures are on all invoices before processing. Prepare accounts payable batches and assist in generating and distributing payments. Maintain communication with staff to facilitate the preparation and processing of accounts payable invoices. Investigate and respond to all accounts payable inquiries. Assist in the preparation of monthly reconciliations and year-end functions for the accounts payable system. Support the CAO in various financial tasks and reporting as needed. Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in finance, accounting, or office administration is an asset. Previous experience in customer service and/or financial administration is preferred. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook). Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting. Position Details: Part-time position: 3 days per week. Bylaw No. 713 proposes to: 1. Add the following Use Class Definitions to Section 1.5 DEFINITIONS: • “COMMUNITY GARDEN” means a private or municipally-owned land that has been made lawfully available to residents of the community to cultivate produce for participant’s consumption and does not include a level of production that regularly supports a revenue stream or income from wholesale or retail sales of excess produce. Community Gardens provide a green space in urban areas, along with opportunities for beautification, education, and recreation. They are managed and maintained with the active participation of the gardeners themselves. • “COMMUNITY HALL/FACILITY” means a development used for public or quasi-public activities, such as community cultural and/or fundraising events. • “INDOOR RECREATION FACILITY” means a development for sports and active recreation within an enclosed building. Indoor recreation facilities include such facilities as ice arenas, gymnasiums, curling rinks, swimming pools, and similar, though smaller, facilities. As well, indoor recreation facilities may include meeting rooms and eating and drinking establishments as accessory uses. 2. Add the following land uses to the Permitted Uses under Section 14.2(1) the Parks and Recreation District (PR): • Community Garden • Community Hall • Indoor Recreation Facility 3.
