  • Election to be held in the Village of Berwyn

    For immediate release September 23, 2025 - The Village of Berwyn has received six nominations for five Councillor positions. As a result, an election will be required to determine the new Council for the 2025–2029 term under Alberta’s Local Authorities Election Act. The following individuals have put their names forward: • Brian Carreau • Nicole Johnson • Patrick O’Brien • Tristan Vanderklok • Dan Weber • Jane Weber “It’s great to see residents step forward to serve our community,” says CAO Jatin Saini. “We hope to see a strong voter turnout and want to thank those Councillors who are not running again for the time and commitment they’ve given to the Village of Berwyn.” Advance voting will be held at the Village Office from October 14 to 17, 2025, between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and again from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Election Day voting is scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and again from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Village Office. The Mayor will be selected by Council at the Organizational Meeting on October 27, 2025, where the Village of Berwyn Council will be officially sworn in.

    Nominations for the Village of Berwyn 2025 Municipal Election are now closed as of 12:00 noon, today, September 22, 2025, in accordance with the Local Authorities Election Act. Candidates have until 12:00 noon, September 23, 2025 to withdraw their nomination, and the official list of candidates will be posted on our website and social media within 48 hours of the withdrawal deadline.   • Council Highlights - Sept 11, 2025

    Presentation from New Business Owner Council heard a presentation from Hilda de Jong, new owner of the Trinity Repair Building, on the non-profit Fuel-Up Community Access Centre , which provides work opportunities for adults with disabilities and mentorship for youth. She inquired about a property tax exemption, Village support in promotion, signage, and sidewalk repairs. Council welcomed her to the community, thanked her for sharing information about the initiative, and directed Administration to look into her requests. Community Garden Request  Council reviewed a request from the Community Garden Society for Public Works assistance at the community gardens. Due to the small size of the Public Works team and competing priorities, Council recommended that Administration advise the Community Garden Society to use its existing funds to hire a third party to complete the additional work required. Main Street Revitalization Project – Award Certificate Council acknowledged receipt of a commemorative award and certificate from Rick McIver, Alberta’s Minister of Transportation, recognizing the Village of Berwyn for receiving the 2025 Minister’s Award for Municipal and Public Library Excellence for the Main Street Revitalization Project. Advance Voting for 2025 Municipal Election Council approved that advance voting for the 2025 municipal election take place at the Village Office from October 14–17, 2025, between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and again from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Administration will post a public notice and implement all required procedures in accordance with the Local Authorities Election Act. Information on the elections can be found on the Village of Berwyn website at berwyn.ca . Speed Control Discussion Council reviewed a letter from a resident suggesting a speed limit reduction in the Village and discussed options to calm traffic and address speeding concerns. Council noted the need to make changes due to resident concerns and complaints about the existing speed bumps. Options considered included additional signage and replacing the bumps with speed humps, which are less costly. Council also noted that sponsorship offers have already been made to help cover the cost of new speed humps, and Administration is obtaining quotes to bring back for Council’s consideration. Harvest Moon Festival Participation Council discussed the volunteer schedule for the Chalk Zone children’s activity area, which is sponsored by the Village of Berwyn. Two council members will be on hand to volunteer at the activity area. The festival takes place in Grimshaw on September 13–14, 2025. Community Donation Council approved a $250 donation to support the RISK (Reduce, Injury with Student Knowledge) Program, a collaborative initiative with RCMP, Alberta Health Services, Victim Services, and partner agencies. The program provides Grade 10 students with education on safe decision-making, including the risks of distracted and impaired driving. Land Use Bylaw Amendment 725 Council held a Public Hearing regarding Bylaw 725, amending the Land Use Bylaw to create a Direct Control District and rezone Lot 13, Block 4, Plan 1090CL from General Residential to Direct Control. One written submission was received and reviewed. Council then gave second and third readings, and the bylaw was approved. Non-residential Tax Incentive Bylaw 687A Council approved Bylaw 687A, amending the Village of Berwyn Non-Residential Tax Incentive Bylaw. The amendments introduce a phased five-year tax exemption schedule, clarify eligibility and application requirements, and strengthen compliance provisions, including transferability, clawback clauses, and limits on total exemption periods.

  • Energy Alberta Community Engagement Session

    Energy Alberta is hosting Community Engagement Sessions on the proposed Peace River Nuclear Power Project and hosting a session in Grimshaw on Tuesday, September 24th at the Mile Zero Regional Multiplex from 4:30 – 8:00 p.m. Agenda: 4:30 – 5:00 p.m.: Registration 5:00 – 7:30 p.m.: Presentations and discussions 7:30 – 8:00 p.m.: Follow-up questions and one-on-one conversations If you are unable to attend the Grimshaw session, you are welcome to join a session in Peace River, Weberville, or Manning.     Council has given first reading to Bylaw 725, a proposed amendment to the Village of Berwyn Land Use Bylaw. The amendment would create a Direct Control District and rezone Lot 13, Block 4, Plan 1090CL from General Residential to Direct Control. A Public Hearing on Bylaw 725 will be held on: Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 5:30 pm Location: Village Office Council Chambers Members of the public are invited to attend and provide input.

  • Mainstreet Filming August 22

    Please be advised that Dani from Rural Heart Media  will be filming on Main Street tomorrow, Friday, August 22nd, from approximately 2:00–2:45 p.m. to capture footage for the Alberta Government, as part of the Mainstreet Revitalization Project requirements. The video will be published on the Government of Alberta website and the Village’s Facebook page. Please be aware that if you are on Main Street during this time, you may appear in the video. If you do not wish to be filmed, we recommend avoiding Main Street during filming. Village staff will also be on site to collect written consent from individuals present. We appreciate your cooperation as we showcase our community.

  • Council Highlights - August 14, 2025

    Audit Report Cheri Peterson from Meyers Norris Penny presented the findings of the audit of the Village of Berwyn’s Financial Statements for the 2024 fiscal year. Cheri shared thorough information with Council, answered questions, and thanked the Village of Berwyn staff for their support throughout the audit. Grant Application for Bike Park Council reviewed information and a recommendation from CAO Jatin Saini regarding the Alberta Blue Cross Built Together Grant. Council approved proceeding with an application for a bike park and directed administration to obtain contractor quotes for the grant application. The Built Together grant provides $50,000 in funding for approved projects that foster active living. Mainstreet Revitalization Project Council reviewed correspondence from Dan Williams, Alberta Minister of Municipal Affairs, indicating that the Village of Berwyn was selected for the 2025 Minister’s Award for Municipal and Public Library Excellence for the Mainstreet Revitalization Project. Minister Williams congratulated the Village on this achievement and commended Council and staff for their work on the project, enhancing the appeal of the Village’s core commercial area. Letter from Municipal Affairs Regarding Ministerial Order Council reviewed correspondence from the Deputy Minister of Municipal Affairs confirming that the Village of Berwyn’s 2025 Action Plan and 10-year Capital Plan update satisfy the requirements set out under Ministerial Order No. MSL:056/18. The letter commended the Village for revisiting recommendations from the viability review report, taking further action where appropriate, and developing sustainable long-term capital plans, reflecting Council’s dedication to the community and long-term sustainability of the Village. RCMP 2025 First Quarter Report Council reviewed the 2025 first quarter RCMP report for the Peace Regional Detachment. Overall, Criminal Code offences declined compared to the same quarter last year, with fewer break-and-enters and motor vehicle thefts. Highlights included successful drug trafficking investigations, increased community engagement through events and school programs, and enhanced traffic enforcement focused on impaired driving. Harvest Moon Festival Council reviewed a letter of request for the Village of Berwyn to participate in the Harvest Moon Festival by supporting the Chalk Zone children’s activity area. Council approved to provide a tent and chalk for the event. The Harvest Moon Festival takes place in Grimshaw on September 13-14, 2025. Land Use Bylaw Amendment 725 Council approved first reading of Bylaw 725, a proposed amendment to the Village of Berwyn Land Use Bylaw to create a Direct Control District and rezone Lot 13 Block 4 Plan 1090CL from General Residential to Direct Control. A Public Hearing will be held on September 11, 2025, at 5:30 pm. Non-residential Tax Incentive Bylaw 687 Council directed administration to amend the Non-residential Tax Incentive Bylaw 687 and bring it to the September 11, 2025, Council Meeting for review and discussion.
