  • Nicole Johnson elected as Mayor

    The Village of Berwyn is excited to welcome Nicole Johnson as the newly elected Mayor. Nicole was elected during the Village of Berwyn Organizational Meeting held on October 10, 2024. She has served as a Councillor and Deputy Mayor during her two-plus years of service. When she first started on Council, there were only three Councillors; now, there is a full Council of five. Nicole lives in Berwyn with her husband, Nolan, and their two children, Jax and Hunter. They are outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy quadding, camping, and snowmobiling, and they love spending time with family. In addition to her role as Mayor, Nicole serves on the Lac Cardinal Regional Economic Development Board and the Berwyn Library Board, and she has aspirations to join the Alberta Municipalities Board in the future. Nicole expressed her enthusiasm for Berwyn as a strong and unified community where everyone is dedicated to making it the best it can be. “I think it’s hard enough these days to get by. How wonderful it is to have a community where we can help one another, support each other, and share great ideas for our Village,” says Nicole. She also noted that the Council is eager to hear ideas and concerns from residents, business owners, and supporters. “With the input of our community and the dedication of our Council, I believe Berwyn will continue to thrive as a great place to live.” Congratulations, Nicole, and thank you for your service on Council and your evident dedication and passion for the Village of Berwyn.

  • Council Meeting Highlights - Sept 12/24

    Social Media Policy Council approved a Social Media Policy outlining guidelines for public interaction on the Village of Berwyn’s social media platforms. It details acceptable behavior, content moderation standards, and consequences for inappropriate conduct. The policy can be viewed here. Town Cleanup Event Council approved hosting a Fall Cleanup Event from September 16 to 30, 2024, by placing a roll-off bin in front of the old Public Works shop where residents can dispose of yard debris and unpainted wood. For residents unable to transport their debris to the bin, Public Works will offer curbside pickup during the week of September 16 to 20, 2024. These residents are asked to place their yard debris and unpainted wood items at the front curb. No household items should be placed by the curb or in the bin. Speed Bumps and Stop Signs Council discussed the stop sign and speed bump project and directed Administration to proceed with installing bases for the speed bumps and purchasing two additional stop signs to convert the two-way stop at Glenmeyer Park into a four-way stop. Public Hearing Council held a Public Hearing regarding Bylaw 716, a proposed amendment to the Village of Berwyn Land Use Bylaw 601, with no concerns put forth.   Land Use Bylaw 716 Amendment Council approved the second and third readings to the Land Use Bylaw 716 amendments. Key changes include: New community spaces for public use include community gardens, halls, and indoor recreation facilities. Re-districting specific areas from General Residential to Parks and Recreation to make room for these new developments. Tax Penalty Bylaw 717 Council approved Tax Penalty Bylaw 717. The proposed bylaw formalizes the updated penalty structure for unpaid property taxes and rescinds the outdated Bylaw 593.

  • Fall Clean Up

    The Village will be conducting a Fall Clean-Up, with a roll-off bin placed in front of the old Public Works shop starting on Monday, September 16, 2024. This bin is for yard debris and unpainted wood only—household garbage should not be placed in it. If you are unable to transport your debris to the bin, Public Works will be offering curbside pickup one day next week. Simply leave your debris by the front curb, and they will collect it for you.

    Village of Berwyn – Front Desk Customer Service & Financial Assistant (Part-Time) The Village of Berwyn seeks a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a  Part-Time Front Desk Customer Service & Financial Assistant . Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), this position is critical in providing exceptional service to our residents while assisting with various financial and clerical tasks. This is a part-time position, requiring availability  three days a week . General Responsibilities: Greet and assist the public courteously and efficiently at the front desk. Handle telephone inquiries and perform reception duties, including cash receipting and customer transactions. Assist in preparing and delivering bank deposits as required. Maintain and update a current Procedural Manual. Provide support in other related duties as assigned by the CAO. Collaborate positively as a team member in all Village of Berwyn operations. Financial Responsibilities: Assist in maintaining accounts payable records, verifying invoices, and matching them with purchase orders. Ensure proper coding and signatures are on all invoices before processing. Prepare accounts payable batches and assist in generating and distributing payments. Maintain communication with staff to facilitate the preparation and processing of accounts payable invoices. Investigate and respond to all accounts payable inquiries. Assist in the preparation of monthly reconciliations and year-end functions for the accounts payable system. Support the CAO in various financial tasks and reporting as needed. Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in finance, accounting, or office administration is an asset. Previous experience in customer service and/or financial administration is preferred. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook). Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting. Position Details: Part-time position: 3 days per week. Community Gardens provide a green space in urban areas, along with opportunities for beautification, education, and recreation. They are managed and maintained with the active participation of the gardeners themselves. • “COMMUNITY HALL/FACILITY” means a development used for public or quasi-public activities, such as community cultural and/or fundraising events. • “INDOOR RECREATION FACILITY” means a development for sports and active recreation within an enclosed building. Indoor recreation facilities include such facilities as ice arenas, gymnasiums, curling rinks, swimming pools, and similar, though smaller, facilities. As well, indoor recreation facilities may include meeting rooms and eating and drinking establishments as accessory uses. 2. Add the following land uses to the Permitted Uses under Section 14.2(1) the Parks and Recreation District (PR): • Community Garden • Community Hall • Indoor Recreation Facility 3.   • Council Highlights - August 22, 2024

    🖊️ Jatin Saini Appointed as Acting CAO Council appointed Jatin Saini as Acting CAO, effective August 28, 2024. Jatin has been with the Village since mid-June in finance and administration. Council also approved the creation of a Finance Assistant position to help with the transition and distribution of work. 🖊️ CAO Recognition Council expressed appreciation to Matthew Norbern, Village of Berwyn CAO, for his contributions to the Village and his efforts in advancing the community. They acknowledged his ability to think outside the box and thanked him for his dedication and hard work. Matthew will transition to a CAO position in Hanna, Alberta, with his last day with the Village being August 27th. 🖊️ Subdivision of Village Property Council approved the first reading of a proposal to subdivide the property at 5102-50 Avenue, located behind the Village Administration Office. This subdivision will facilitate the sale of the land, which is no longer in use. The property, formerly used by the Berwyn Fire Department, is surplus due to the fire department's merger with the MD of Peace’s Lac Cardinal Fire Department. A public hearing on this proposal will be held at 6:30 p.m. on September 12, 2024, at the Village Administration Office, prior to the regular Council meeting. 🖊️ Nurse Practitioner Attraction Policy Council approved the Nurse Practitioner (NP) Policy, which outlines the eligibility criteria, application process, and recruitment incentives designed to attract NPs to Berwyn. During the July Council meeting, Council reviewed a proposal to recruit an NP to live and work in the community and directed the administration to develop a policy focused on this initiative. Attracting a Nurse Practitioner aims to address gaps in regional healthcare services, improve health outcomes, and enhance residents' quality of life. 🖊️ Land Use Bylaw Amendment Council approved amendments to Land Use Bylaw No. 716. The changes introduce definitions for "Community Hall/Facility," "Community Garden," and "Indoor Recreation Facility" and designate them as permitted uses in the Parks and Recreation District. Additionally, the amendments involve redistricting certain areas from General Residential District (R-G) to Public Recreational Districts to meet the growing need for public recreational spaces in the Village. 🖊️ Public Works Appreciation Council expressed appreciation to the Public Works department for their efforts over the summer with a small team and increased responsibilities for various projects and events in the community. Council noted that their dedication to improving the Village is clearly evident in their work. 🖊️ Recreation Equipment Policies Council approved the adoption of a Recreation Equipment Rental Policy that outlines the terms and conditions related to renting the Village of Berwyn’s recreation equipment. 🖊️ ATCO Franchise Fee Council approved increasing the ATCO franchise fee from 6% to 8%, aligning with municipalities similar to the Village of Berwyn. 🖊️ Credit Card Reward Policy Council approved a policy regarding the use of the Village of Berwyn credit card points. The policy directs that accumulated points be used for costs associated with the staff Christmas event and gifts. It establishes clear guidelines for the tracking, approval, and redemption of points to ensure systematic and transparent use.

  • Mainstreet Celebration - August 24th

    Save the Date! We are hosting a celebration of the much-anticipated completion of the Berwyn Mainstreet Paving Project on August 24, 2024 on Mainstreet Berwyn. The daytime community celebration will include opening remarks by government dignitaries, bouncy castles, face painting, a wrestling demonstration, a corn-eating contest sponsored by Bridgeview Market Gardens, a FireSmart BBQ with the MD of Peace in partnership with TC Energy and Grimshaw Coop and much more!   • Fire Ban in Effect

    A 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗘 𝗕𝗔𝗡 has been issued for the Village of Berwyn. This means that: • Fire permits are temporarily suspended until further notice. • All existing fire permits are invalidated. • No fires are permitted in fire pits. • However, fires are allowed in natural gas or propane barbecues. • All other types of burning are prohibited. This fire ban will remain effective until substantial precipitation is received and the Government of Alberta lifts its fire ban. Please report any wildfire or fire by dialing 9-1-1 or calling 310-FIRE. Providing the exact location to 911 is crucial to help fire department personnel swiftly locate and extinguish these fires.
